What Does Semistra Mean? Our Story and the Meaning of Our Name
Semistra (or Semystra, as widely known in ancient sources) is the oldest known historical settlement and cult center established during antiquity on the shores of modern-day Istanbul's Golden Horn (Haliç). Representing the very first cornerstone of Istanbul’s urbanization, trade, and mythological history, this unique name forms the roots and vision of our brand.
Istanbul’s First Settlement: The Thracian Period
Between the 13th and 11th centuries BC, Thracian tribes migrating from the Balkans settled at the innermost point of the Golden Horn. This area, located in the sheltered basin where today’s Kağıthane and Alibeyköy streams meet, became the first organized settlement in Istanbul under the name Semistra. The origin and meaning of our name come directly from this deep-rooted history.
What Does the Name "Semistra" Represent?
In historical and cultural literature, Semistra means "the first sacred settlement of Thracian origin, where megacity culture, trade, and mythology flourished on the lands of Istanbul."
